All about the Nesting Blend

As winter starts to fade, birds have one big thing on their minds - nesting. February and March mark the start of the breeding season for many species, and that means they’re busy finding mates, defending territories, and gathering materials for their nests. You might have noticed the birds a little more this month - they're certainly more active, and your feeder will be busier too. You might even start getting woken up by birdsong in the mornings.

This is a demanding time. Birds need extra energy for courtship displays, singing, and nest-building. They also need calcium and protein to support egg-laying. Natural food sources are still limited, so a reliable feeder stocked with the right food can make all the difference. You can learn more about how your garden birds' needs change throughout the year in our blog post.

Introducing the Nesting Blend

The Nesting Blend from A Little Bird Co. is designed to support birds through the breeding season. Sunflower hearts (loved by woodpeckers, blue tits, robins, greenfinches and blackbirds) provide an instant hit of energy, and extra suet pellets help keep them going when temperatures are still unpredictable. We use mealworm suet for the extra boost of energy, and, as always, we use quality suet - because we know birds won’t eat the cheap stuff! Wrens, siskins and woodpeckers love suet - as do most of our garden birds!

What makes this blend stand out is the oyster shell grit - a vital source of calcium that helps birds lay strong, healthy eggs. In the wild, birds seek out natural sources of calcium like snail shells, grit, and even eggshells from other birds. Providing oyster shell grit in feeders ensures they get enough calcium at a time when their bodies need it most. There’s also a generous helping of mealworms, packed with protein to help growing chicks develop properly. Mealworms will bring in robins, finches, siskins and thrushes.

By offering the Nesting Blend, you’re giving your garden birds the best possible start to their breeding season.

Which birds can I see this season?

This is when the dawn chorus really gets going! Robins, blackbirds, and song thrushes are among the first to sing at dawn, while blue tits and great tits start checking out nest boxes. You might see males chasing each other away from prime nesting spots - territorial disputes can get quite dramatic!

Spring migrants start arriving too. Chiffchaffs are often the first, with their distinctive “chiff-chaff” song, and if you’re lucky, you might even hear the first blackcaps singing. Starlings perform their last big murmurations before breaking into pairs and nesting, while house sparrows and dunnocks scuttle around in search of good nesting sites.
