Thoughtful Christmas Gifting for People Who Have “Enough”
Every year, I put together a little gift guide for people who want to swerve the Black Friday madness and make their purchases in a more considered way. You might have caught the viral Instagram post recently, where a mum asks her two young children to recall three gifts they received last year (I'm sure you can imagine the punchline). It made me think about how much better it feels to give something that earns its place, rather than something that’s forgotten by January. This year’s meaningful Christmas gift ideas focus on things that feel good to give and good to receive, especially if you’re looking for sustainable Christmas gifts made here in the UK. Sustainability doesn’t need to mean worthy choices or compromises. It can be choosing items that last, materials that age well, and makers who care about the impact of what they create.
All of this ties into how we approach Christmas shopping as a whole, which brings me to a day that never quite sits right with me…
My thoughts on Black Friday
As a small business owner, I can't help but feel disheartened when it comes to Black Friday. Small brands like mine can't compete with Amazon, and we can't match the discounts offered by bigger brands. Next or same day shipping are often beyond our reach. But what we can offer is quality, care and thought. I read the quote below shared by sustainable homeware and slow fashion retailer Quinn Says this week:
"If everyone in the UK bought just one of their Christmas gifts from a small business instead of Amazon, it would put an extra £2.6 billion into the pockets of makers, artists and independents this Christmas."
That statistic just blew my mind - just think of the difference we can make with our decisions. We have so many small business owners working tirelessly at this time of year in the UK - let's show them some support,
Gifts for children
I always think that the most sustainable gifts for children - the ones that stand the test of time - are the toys that don’t do the playing for them. If something lights up and flashes, or if there's one ‘correct’ way of playing with a toy, it will be played with far less than something open-ended. Fewer, better-made items that encourage exploration and imagination will lead to far fewer complaints of “I'm bored” than a toy box packed with an overwhelming number of toys. Toys made from natural materials will often last longer (and look better if they're left out, meaning less tidy-up pressure), and will often grow with the child too.
I love to gift sorting and building blocks, magnetic tiles, puzzle toys, model animals or vehicles, arts and crafts materials, play kitchen items, simple musical instruments and Lego. The Babipur website stocks some really beautiful options.
Gifts for grown ups
When it comes to sustainable gifts for grown-ups, I try to think of options that fit with an existing routine, make life simpler or more enjoyable, and offer a genuinely eco-friendly Christmas gift alternative. Something that will slot into their lives and bring a little happiness every day. I also think an experience voucher is a lovely gift to receive, because it's often something they wouldn't invest in for themselves.

I’ve always felt that Christmas gifting can be a chance to slow down and choose things that genuinely make life better, for us, for wildlife, and for the planet. That’s the hope behind everything I create at A Little Bird Co. If you’re looking for something meaningful this year, my Bird Feeding Starter Set and the children’s version are a lovely way to bring a simple daily ritual into someone’s home. And if you’d like a gift that lasts long after Christmas, the prepaid bird food gift subscription includes my monthly garden birdwatching magazine, giving them something to look forward to each month as they get to know the visitors in their garden - the perfect Christmas gift for bird watchers, gardeners and bird lovers.
