Great design, great value!

The Starling-Proof Bird Feeder Guardian set is a great design and has everything tailor made in one kit. After many years of using an integral feeder & cage, which needed fiddly screws removing to dismantle it, and I wired a plant pot saucer underneath to catch dropped seed, I now have a purpose made set. The Ring-Pull Click feeder is so easy to take apart for cleaning. The dish easily screws onto the base of the feeder. The rain shield fits perfectly (slide on from the bottom when the feeder is empty and the perches removed). The guardian keeps squirrels, pigeons, magpies and starlings at bay. Happy little birds! The guardian is a bit bright, being silver-grey, but I'm think of painting it matt green to match the cage around my other feeder.

I'm so pleased to hear that the set is working well and that you have happy birds using it regularly! Thank you so much for writing such a lovely review!

What a success!

This certainly works. Both starlings and squirrels cannot use the feeder, with the small birds able to feed in peace. The small birds which use it are mostly goldfinches, greenfinches, great tits, blue tits and coal tits. Chaffinches and sparrows have not used it yet. We have kept a feeder that the starlings can use and the squirrels have a feeder box so neither gets frustrated or left out. It keeps everyone happy, including us!! Although the feeder was expensive, we are wasting much less bird food because only the small birds use the feeder. Previously, starlings and squirrels could empty a feeder incredibly quickly, often knocking a lot of the food onto the ground. Satisfied customers!

Oh I'm so pleased! Thank you so much for the lovely review, I'm happy to hear that the goldfinches, blue tits and friends are able to eat. That's a great idea to have a separate feeder for the starlings and squirrels so that everyone gets to eat - it sounds like you have a beautiful, busy garden! Thank you for buying from my small business, and for the review.

Helping the little birds

This has been great for deterring larger birds to my feeder. Not quite enough to keep parakeets off but that’s a local problem!

So happy to hear that you're pleased with the feeder! We find that parakeets can't get into the cage (although they can peck from the seed tray at the bottom, which is something I'm trying to find a solution to). I hope the little birds are getting a chance to eat!

Starlings and squirrels defeated

This genuinely works - hoorah! Top marks 👍
The starlings are just too big to get in. The take some of the seed from the tray at the bottom but that’s it. So this feeder lasts MUCH longer than the one next door which I still allow the starlings to raid.
The squirrels have had hours of fun climbing all over this feeder trying to find a weakness. Our squirrels are bird feeder pros - they pull the lids off, throw them on the floor etc. They have now stopped trying to break into this one. It’s impossible.

That's such good news! I'm so pleased to hear! Woohoo! Thank you for the lovely review!

Thoughts from our founder, Clare

I have a huge flock of starlings in my garden, and while I support their conservation, they often dominate other feeders. I put together this Starling Proof Set to ensure the little birds get their share. The guardian cage works brilliantly – starlings can peck at the seed tray but quickly become frustrated and move on. The addition of the RainAway Guard even prevents the food from getting wet and mouldy. People often ask which birds can get into the feeder cage, and we see sparrows, robins, tits, finches, blackcaps and more inside ours - just no starlings, squirrels, pigeons, crows, magpies and parakeets!

Seed tray included

Bold birds, squirrels, and rodents are often drawn to the food that falls beneath your feeder. Some larger birds even learn to swing the feeder to shake seeds loose, making an easy meal on the ground.

The Starling Proof Feeder Set helps prevent this by catching fallen seed in its attached tray, reducing waste and keeping the area beneath your feeder cleaner. It has drainage holes in the bottom, perfect to stop food going soggy on rainy days.

Carefully sized apertures

The heavy-duty guardian cage is designed to let smaller birds - like robins, tits, finches, and sparrows - feed in peace while keeping out larger birds such as starlings, pigeons, crows, and even parakeets. With 4cm by 3.5cm openings, it provides a safe feeding space for little visitors. Plus, its tough design stands up to squirrels, preventing them from chewing through.

Rainaway Rain Guard

Now that you've managed to stop squirrels, pigeons, parakeets, crows and starlings from eating the bird food, you'll find yourself refilling it far less often. To prevent food from spoiling in the rain, we’ve added a rain guard - keeping both the seed and the birds dry while they feed. It’s also quick and easy to fit - just push it down over the feeder, and you're all set!

  • How to set up your Starling Resistant Feeder Set

This feeder set is quick to set up, so the birds can get eating straight away!

    Keep scrolling to learn more

  • 1. Screw on the seed tray

The seed tray collects any dropped seed, and is attached to the bottom of the heavy duty Ring Pull Click bird feeder with a nut and tightened by hand.

  • 2. Slide on the rain guard

Food lasts longer with this set up, and the rain guard keeps it fresh and dry. Remove the bird feeder cap and wire hanger. Gently squeeze the feeder tube to remove the crossbar, then carefully push the rain guard down the tube before replacing the cross bar, hanger, and cap.

  • 3. Add the guardian cage

The cage sits over the top of the feeder to prevent bigger birds and squirrels from getting to the food. Fill the feeder before attaching the guardian cage, and then position your Starling Resistant Feeder Set in an open location with shrubs near by so the little birds can hide if they need to.

  • "It is squirrel proof too!"

Although I was reluctant to spend over £80 on a bird feeder I was frustrated at the amount of food eaten by squirrels and sometimes starlings. The feeder is large and very robust , the blue tits love it, the robins are still a bit wary but gaining in confidence to use it. The squirrels spent a disproportionate amount of time in the first week trying to find a way in. They can just, with difficulty, reach the tray to eat the discarded food and although still trying, their visits are greatly reduced. I can fully justify the purchase now.

How quickly will I receive my Starling Proof Feeder?

We post all orders within 1-2 working days (Monday - Friday during working hours). Our standard shipping takes 2-3 days to arrive. We also offer express shipping which should reach you more quickly.

Is there a warranty?

Absolutely! You're covered by a 2 year warranty from the manufacturer for your Ring Pull Click feeder (just make sure you register the feeder when you receive it).

Will the Starling Proof Feeder Set stop parakeets?

Great question! Parakeets are highly intelligent birds and can be trickier to deter than most. They can’t climb inside the cage to reach the feeding ports, but they often poke their heads through the apertures to peck at the food in the seed tray. If you’re using a high-quality food blend, there shouldn’t be much spillage, and they will quickly switch to a feeder that is easier for them to access.

How does the Starling Resistant Feeder Set work?

The feeder set has been carefully engineered with small birds in mind. Its design includes a guardian cage that restricts access, allowing starlings to only squeeze in just enough to take a small nibble from the seed tray before they’re forced to move on. This means that while starlings may still visit, they can’t monopolise the food, ensuring that the little birds always get their fair share.

Is the feeder set suitable for all weather conditions?

Absolutely. Constructed with robust, weather-resistant materials, the Starling Resistant Feeder Set is designed to endure everything from damp, rainy days to chilly winters. Its durable build means that it continues to protect your bird food and keep the little birds safe, regardless of the weather. You might have seen cheaper alternatives on the market - often they are made from a flexible or coated steel, which can rust or warp over time. This is the strongest set we’ve trialled, which is why we sell it with pride.

What maintenance does the feeder set require?

The feeder set is built to last through all seasons with minimal fuss. A clean of the seed tray, feeder, cage and rain guard every couple of weeks is recommended to prevent mould or damp seed from building up. The Ring Pull Click feeder is easy to disassemble for thorough cleaning, and you can find out how to clean your bird feeders here. Overall, the design is low-maintenance, so you can spend more time enjoying the birds and less time worrying about upkeep.

I had a set similar to this, but the squirrels chewed through the cage. Will that happen with this design?

The cage is surprisingly strong and chew-proof. Unlike most cages made from thinner wire and covered in green plastic, this design is exceptionally robust. When held between two hands, it cannot be squeezed, indicating it should hold up well against even the most persistent teeth.
