All about the Fall Into Winter Blend

As the days get shorter and temperatures start to drop, birds shift their focus to survival. Many species have finished moulting, and their fresh new feathers will help them through the colder months ahead. Some birds will be preparing for migration, while others are stocking up on food to build fat reserves for winter. You can learn more about how your garden birds' needs change throughout the year in our blog post.

Autumn can be unpredictable. Natural food supplies vary depending on weather conditions, and shorter days mean less time for foraging. This is when having a well-stocked feeder really helps, giving birds an easy, reliable food source as they adjust to the changing season.

Introducing the Fall Into Winter Blend

The Fall Into Winter Blend from A Little Bird Co. has been carefully crafted to support them during these colder months, when natural food sources are scarcer and the energy demands on birds are higher. Packed with a mix of essential ingredients, this blend provides the perfect combination of quick energy, healthy fats, and essential nutrients to help our feathered friends stay strong and healthy through the season.

Sunflower Hearts are a key ingredient, offering high protein and calories with a quick-to-eat ratio that’s perfect for fast food. These nutrient-rich hearts help birds maintain glossy feathers and healthy skin and beaks, all while keeping them fuelled through the cold, and will attract a wide range of species, including goldfinches, blue tits, woodpeckers and goldfinches. Pinhead Oats, which are the inner part of oats, are another great source of energy. These tiny pieces are ideal for small birds like wrens, dunnocks, and finches, offering them a quick burst of energy to keep them going. We add extra mealworms to our Fall Into Winter Blend to keep the birds coming back to your feeder - they don't look too tasty to us, but they're always a firm favourite with your garden birds! An extra helping of Suet Pellets add high-energy fat to the mix, which is essential for maintaining strength in winter. They also provide calcium, which is crucial for strong bones and healthy feathers. This makes them a must-have for birds like tits, wrens, thrushes, and woodpeckers. We're always fussy about the brand of suet we use in our mixes, because we know from experience that there are mixes that the birds just won't eat - we only use high quality suet products at A Little Bird Co.. Peanuts offer a wonderful source of potassium, vitamins A and E, iron, fat, and protein, all of which are vital for a bird’s health.

Which birds can I see this season?

Autumn is a time of change in the bird world. Many summer visitors, like swallows and house martins, leave for Africa, while winter visitors start to arrive. Look out for redwings and fieldfares, fresh from Scandinavia, raiding berry-laden trees.

Resident birds, like blackbirds, robins, and tits, become more visible as they establish winter territories. Goldfinches and siskins flock to feeders, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot the first bramblings of the season.

The seasonal bird food brand

We're a little company, supporting little birds. Find out more about what sets us apart.

  • Seasonal

Birds have different dietary needs throughout the year, from nesting to moulting and surviving colder months. To support these changes, we’ve created seasonal blends – order a Seasonal Bird Food bag, and we’ll adjust the blend to match the season, making it easy to do something great for the birds.

  • Sustainable

Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. We don't farm, process, and transport cheap filler ingredients that birds simply kick to the floor. Instead, we focus on premium ingredients they love. Our packaging is compostable, and our bird feeders and nest boxes are tested for durability and longevity.

  • Songbird

We design our food and select our range of feeders with little birds in mind. Every ingredient in our blends is chosen because small birds love it, simplifying your bird feeding routine. Our feeders provide safe access to food while helping to keep out larger, more dominant species. Look out for robins, blue tits, wrens, finches and more visiting your garden for our food.

  • Support

With birds in your garden, you’re never alone - they’re the friends who always visit. Feeding them supports wildlife conservation while bringing joy and calm. Whether spotting a new species or simply watching their daily routines, just ten minutes a day strengthens your connection with nature and boosts your wellbeing.
